Hi! I just finished Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. It was my first historical fiction novel and I really loved it. The story completely pulled me in (even though I wasn’t a big fan of the ending).
Since I’ve mostly studied European history, reading this made me curious about other parts of the world, especially Asia, which feels pretty unfamiliar to me.
I then tried The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai, but it didn’t really work for me. I’m not entirely sure why, but I’m starting to think I might just not enjoy first-person narration. A lot of books I’ve dropped seem to have that in common.
So I’d really appreciate some recommendations for historical fiction set in Asia, written in third person, preferably by Asian authors to learn about a country's culture and history.
Thanks!
