I think it's becoming more common for people to interpret some relationships in media as queerbait (whether they're correct in their assumptions is irrelevant though), as in, the audience is purposefully led to believe that two characters have feelings for each other or will get into a relationship, but they end up being revealed straight or getting into straight relationships/marriages.
Sometimes certain series become well-known for this, so I was wondering if there is any book/s with a considerable audience/fandom where the opposite has happened; that is, a major character (protagonist/deuteragonist/antagonist) was largely assumed to be straight or will end up with a member of the opposite gender, but went the other way, surprising most people.
