Penguin are always readily available and that's what I usually buy, but lately I've been hearing lots of good things about Oxford.

I just bought penguins Count of Monte Cristo to read again soon, but I was thinking maybe I should try Oxford?

Does anyone have experience with both over the course of a few books and have strong feelings one way or another? Not just on the count but in general…which publisher puts out a better product?

Oxford tends to have better scholarly apparatus if you’re into that – footnotes, introductions, textual notes etc. Penguin is more accessible and their covers are iconic but Oxford definitely wins on the academic side of things

For something like Count of Monte Cristo you probably won’t notice a huge difference in translation quality, but if you’re planning to read more classics regularly I’d lean Oxford
