I mostly read contemporary fiction books and have noticed that a lot of them involve characters grieving or overcoming some significant loss. I have a terminally ill family member and it is starting to upset me reading about all of these books as it is a recent diagnosis. I am looking for some book suggestions that are still interesting but won't make me sad and too deep in thought- I read to try to decompress before bed. I randomly grabbed two at the library that both revolved around the characters coping after the loss of their dad. Some recent books i liked: Broken Country, Blue Sisters, My Friends (lol these all have grief which is what i don't want).

There’s a book called The Wizard’s Butler that is modern day but with a tiny amount of magic and pixies are mentioned but not characters. I think it would be called a cozy since there’s no death or anything like that. It is free on Kindle unlimited.

    2. Oh my gosh, I hear you! We’re trying to pick a book for my book club that’s a lighter read – we seem to always end up with murder mysteries or grieving people (ex. The Wedding People, The Correspondent). I’m hoping you get some suggestions I can steal!

    3. The Dictionary of lost words. Girl grows up surrounded by the creation of the Oxford Dictionary. Not too bad on the grief and loss if I recall. More about language and the patriarchy

Have you read the Monk & Robot series by Becky Chambers? Very peaceful and thought-provoking.

    5. The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece by Tom Hanks

Funny Girl by Nick Hornby (set in the 1960s but published in the past 10 years)

      Limelight by Amy Poeppel

Howls Moving Castle was a nice read! My reading topics tend to skew pretty heavy but occasionally I really need a break and just pick up whatever random teen/YA drama is recommended and available on Libby…Rent A Boyfriend by Gloria Chao was cute.

Sorry for what you’re going through ♥️

    7. The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson is a lighthearted and entertaining read; I read it during a really tough time and there were parts that made me laugh out loud.
