I read the book "Breathing Fire: Female Inmate Firefighters on the Front Lines of California's Wildfires" by Jamie Lowe a few years ago and have never stopped thinking about it.
I've been fascinated by firefighting and fire professionals for years, and loved the insight into the logistics of attacking a wildfire scenario. I also loved the other side of the story – giving an opportunity, albeit dangerous, for people who have made mistakes in their lives to do something genuinely good and brave to benefit their community.
I've had the occasional delusional thought about being a firefighter myself, but could definitely not handle the physical demands. So I participate vicariously through media. Already read the "Masters at Work" book by Jeff Wilser, which was good, but too short.
Frustratingly, when I put out the idea of enjoying firefighters and firefighting, people usually assume I'm in it for the kink. It's hard to search for books on the topic without falling into the cheesy romance area. I'd love something more focused on the experience, the work, etc. I'm sure there are some very good memoirs, and hopefully some fiction along the same lines.
So…any ideas for more like the Lowe book? Ideally featuring some badass women? Thank you!
