I'm just looking for very insightful, very knowledgeable books about the current situation in France, both socially and politically, and how they got there. I've read a fair amount about the Algerian war and the whole Algerian colonization effort, so I don't think I need more of that, but of course I may easily have missed a masterpiece I didn't know of, so don't hold back.
I'm currently reading (and re-reading, oddly enough!) Alain Badiou's book, The Meaning of Sarkozy, and while his style is reasonably impenetrable — he seems to think he has a reputation to uphold, for that — he is also quite thoughtful and (obviously, since I'm re-reading it) worth spending time on. Enjoying it a great deal, looking for antidotes or just different perspectives!
