I’m currently reading the Throne of Glass series, and I’m on the fifth book. I was really disappointed when Chaol and Aelin broke up. What I appreciated about Chaol is that his entire personality didn’t revolve around Aelin. He wasn’t afraid to critique her or question her, which made their relationship feel real to me.
Rowan, on the other hand, feels overly obsessed with Aelin and lacks thoughts or goals outside of her, which I found disappointing. Chaol was a breath of fresh air compared to most male leads because he had his own values, convictions, and agency.
I tend to find obsessive, “perfect” male leads unrealistic and, honestly, boring. They usually agree with everything the female lead says, and they often can’t stand on their own without her. I don’t want to read 300 pages of a man whose entire existence is centered on obsessing over a girl.
So, I’m looking for a book with a male lead who is similar to Chaol, someone who isn’t afraid to call the female lead out when she’s wrong, and who has his own goals, beliefs, and identity independent of the romance. I don’t mind if the mmc is obsess or madly in love with her, as long as it doesn’t make up entire character
