Here are my 2026 reads so far and my ratings of them. What would you suggest based on them?

    2026 books

    • Project Hail Mary 5/10
    • Babel 9.5/10
    • The help 8.5/10
    • Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine 8.5/10
    • The women 3/10
    • This is how you lose the time war DNF

Honestly would love some good sci-fi, unfortunately the two I tried really didn’t do it for me. Couldn‘t stand Time War’s prose, and got very annoyed by PHM’s totally unbelievable world and relationship building. The space travel bit was fine, but the way things on earth unfolded was so nonsensical that I couldn’t quite get past it. Thanks for any suggestions!

Try Hyperion by Dan Simmons. Very rich story, amazing narrative design (it’s a retelling of the Canterbury Tales), plus lots of discussion about poetry, language, philosophy, and some great world building. It’s a four-book series (the Hyperion Cantos); the first two and the latter two (haven’t read these later ones yet) are somewhat separate stories, so 1 & 2 together are super gratifying as a pair.
