something along the lines of The Martian and Project Hail Mary. i don't like fighting aliens but studying them. I'm fine with scifi spacey medical thrillers like Gravity.
probably more nerdy stuff and if it's a BL/GL at the core, it's fine but romance doesn't have to be the center. i'm a big NASA nerd so yeah probably lotsa that. nothin' too political. i just want astronauts doing their funny astronaut things in disaster with enough humor and also being gay at the same time
thank youuuuu

Not a book, but “For All Mankind” on Apple TV. Later seasons especially.
They don’t spend a lot of time actually in space in Atmosphere, but it is a 1980s NASA lesbian romance
It’s not a massive part of the books but The Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers has a gay (or bi?) protagonist.
I’ve only read the first one but it was one of the four 5 star books i read last year. Not usually a sci fi person but it blew me away.
The Darkness Outside Us is YA, but I liked it. A bit light horror, a bit 2001 a Space Odyssey with a nice ending. I liked that the two main characters being gay was a non-issue, the issue was the spaceship, etc.
You could try In Ascension by Martin MacInnes. It’s not set in space the whole way through but I think it otherwise fits your spec.
The Vanished Birds – Simon Jimenez is a space opera (not nasa, takes place all over Galaxy) and has a lesbian character with a romance storyline
A Memory Called Empire might be in your wheelhouse
Hmm, there’s the luminous dead. I have issues with that book, but tons of people really liked it. Imo it kinda dropped parts of the interesting horror plot in favor of a romance b plot. That may be spoilers but I was one of the people who felt like they needed to foreshadow that way sooner so I could be aware. Cause I was there for the horror and felt like it undermined my expectations in the wrong way. But it has a number of cool scenes, some cool sci fi concepts, and the main character is gay.
