Books with the good paragon protagonist in a cynical world, who then changes those around them?

I'm a big fan of Superman and movies like 12 Angry Men, Mr Smith goes to Washington, its a Wonderful life (and other Capra movies). I have just started getting into reading. Any famous novels that have optimistic and good hearted protagonists who go up against a cynical world?
