Im having difficulty explaining what I’m trying to find. I’m looking for a book where the characters are to some extent in conversation with the narrator. Fourth wall breaking and meta, but not so much towards the audience as the writer/narrator (who is not an actual character).
I’m not concerned with genre, but had to choose a tag.
I guess an example would be:
Frank thumbed through the dossier, mumbling nonsense under his breath.
“It’s not nonsense,” Frank said. “I’m trying to remember what I’m looking for.”
Frank continued his very important mumbling until he found it.
