I’m in the mood to suffer emotionally.
Preferably lesbian, but I’ll take gay or any other queer romance as well. I do prefer fiction to real life/biographies though.
I don’t mind spoilers in the comments either so feel free to tell me the endings/why they’re sad.
The sadder, the better. I want heartbreak like watching the end of Marley and Me, Million Dollar Baby, The Green Mile, and Grave of the Fireflies combined.
I know Adam Silvera writes gay stories that usually end sad, but I’ve read all his books already so I need something new.
Thank you in advance!!!

oh man youre really going for the emotional devastation huh lol i totally get that mood sometimes where you just want to ugly cry into a book
definitely check out “the seven husbands of evelyn hugo” if you havent already – theres some serious lesbian heartbreak in there that will absolutely wreck you. also “we are okay” by nina lacour is brutal in the best way, its about grief and first love and losing everything that matters
if you want something a bit older “the price of salt” by patricia highsmith has this bittersweet ending that just stays with you forever even tho its not completely tragic. and honestly anything by tj klune but especially “the house in teh cerulean sea” sequel called “somewhere beyond the sea” gets pretty heavy
for maximum emotional damage though try “the song of achilles” by madeline miller – its mlm and based on greek mythology so you know its gonna end badly but holy shit the way she writes it will destroy you. patroclus and achilles deserved better and youll spend days thinking about it
hope you find something that properly ruins your day in the best possible way
Wouldn’t call it a romance, but I cried actual tears when reading “our wives under the sea”, and then I told what happened in the book to my wife – and she also cried. And mind you, I don’t remember the last time I’d previously cried when reading a book (with ~70 books every year it’s saying something)
If you’re uncomfortable with being uneasy because some weird shit is going on in the deep depths of the sea, then it won’t be your thing. But if you are, oh boy, buy all the tissues you can afford.
