I haven't read much horror but I enjoyed Stephen King's It and Insomnia. I like Lovecraftian threats like The Sphere by Michael Crichton. Not horror but the threat in the first Expanse book, Leviathan Wakes, was fun to read about and figure out. I liked the mysteries in that book and the believable sci-fi setting but I'm totally open to a more modern setting as well. If it leans too close to fantasy I lose interest (jedis, space elves, wizards, sword fights, etc).

I think I'm looking for something similar to the movie The Thing by John Carpenter. I like that it borders on competency porn where the protagonists use whits and trial and error to fight back rather than over the top action or the power of friendship. I like slowly learning how to deal with the threat without unveiling too much so there's still enough mystery to keep you wondering.

    Thank you!

    1. If you like Lovecraftian threats you might enjoy John Langan – The Fisherman is a great book in that genre. I also love his short stories, with the Wide Carnivorous Sky being my favorite story and the title of my favorite of his collection of stories.

If you’re down for something long but exquisitely done, Hyperion by Dan Simmons. It’s a sci-fi opera with a god-like antagonist of sorts. I’m finishing the second book now.

Finally, I would suggest checking out Adrian Tchaikovsky’s works too. The Final Architecture series is great. The first book has a threat looming at the edges that’s much like Leviathan Wakes. A being so powerful it defies imagination. There’s a good amount of competency porn from some of the characters, specially by a disabled character that uses her skills to overcome her limits and is a certified bad ass.
