Books where the main character bonds with an animal like Temeraire, Fourth Wing (Dragons), The Lotus Wars (Gryphons) etc. No preference for what kind of animal. Magical or special bond/connection/choosing. Bonus if its military but open to anything!

As the title says, looking for books with a magical bond/connection/choosing with an animal or creature. I used to love Mercedes Lacked stuff when I was a kid but prefer more grown up stuff now rather than YA. Open to literary fiction, fantasy, fantasy-romance etc, don't mind the genre really.
