I loved the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie for the fantasy style of it and recently decided to try to read the books. However, in the books, the characters were definitely younger but also alot more immature so it felt very much more of a teen book. I would love to get recommendations on books that have the same feel as the movie, but have more mature characters.

I especially love the theme of an undersground world being beneath the modern day world. So if there are books with that theme, that would be great 🙂

    1. The sub-genre is called Urban Fantasy, and there are a few you might enjoy!

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher follows a ‘wizard detective’ in Chicago, who deals with the hidden supernatural world and crimes/mysteries related to that. The first book is Storm Front, and while it’s a lot of fun the series really picks up and starts to get epic, deeper, and more complex from book 4 onwards.

Another one that follows a detective in the UK who discovers the ‘supernatural division’ of the police force and is drawn into that hidden world, is Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch.

For a really unique, wild, engaging novel that will have you saying wtf from start to finish, check out The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. It follows Carolyn, a member of a seemingly powerful group of weirdos living in secret among ‘regular Americans’.
