    1. I don’t know off the top of my head but I think Hitchens speaks to that in God Is Not Great

I believe you’re talking about penal substitionary atonement theory. There are a few different atonement theories going all the way back to about 300 CE, but that one has been dominant since around the Reformation. Writings from earlier church fathers will have different theories, but the reading can be dense. (Wikipedia actually has a pretty good entry with summaries and the theologians associated with each [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvation_in_Christianity#Atonement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvation_in_Christianity#Atonement) )

I like Theologizin’ Bigger by Trey Ferguson, it’s very approachable and he makes a good argument for universal salvation and Christus Victor.

CS Lewis is also approachable and was of the Christus Victor school of thought, but I don’t think he ever takes on Penal Substitutionary Atonement

Brian Zahnd is a fantastic author. I’d start with Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God

I’ve heard good things about Jesus and the Undoing of Adam by Kruger (argues for Ransom Theory of Atonement), but I have not read it myself
