Finding it really hard to like books. Books where the author seems to have an intimate understanding or knowledge of plot or situation. I wish I could find something that captures me like Shutter Island the movie too

I dont know if this is a big ask. Im looking for books where the author seems like he has in depth or intimate knowledge of plot or situation. Less half-a**ed

Lesser sexual content preferable. I prefer less romance. I tend to like horror, fantasy, thriller, some psychological thriller. Some guessing element maybe. Not really a fan of sci-fi. I tend to like some complexity. I haven’t been a fan of Stephen King. Liked Shutter Island the movie. I also liked the Netflix show, haunting of Hill house. Dont want a thick chunk of descriptions like in Stephen Kings books if possible.
