Just finished Gorky Park by Martin Cruz Smith and really liked the book. Something I found interesting was the dynamic between the detective and the murderer — they understand each other very well (the villain is even willing to let the detective live, and the detective claims he knows the villain better than anyone else, even his lover), yet they’re on opposite sides and constantly at each other’s throats. I’m looking for more books with this sort of dynamic. Preferably suspense (noir a plus), but I’ll accept other kinds of good books as well.

That detective-villain dynamic is pure gold when done right. You might want to check out Michael Harvey’s Brighton – the relationship between the cop and killer gets pretty twisted in all the best ways. Also Ian Rankin’s Rebus series has some great cat-and-mouse stuff, especially when there dealing with recurring antagonists who genuinely respect each other’s intelligence.
