I am writing a novel (as a hobby) and I’ve read it’s helpful to understand how your story fits into the contemporary literary world — to be able to name comparable books, or the books you can imagine yours being next to on a bookstore display. So I would appreciate your recommendations!
My story is about home, and families, and how you can be flawed and still be a “good enough“ parent. But the two main characters are ghosts. So I think I’m looking for some contemporary fiction that deals with family themes and/or female relationships, and for stories with some sort of magical realism/fantastical element that aren’t, like Fantasy with a capital F. I’ve read *The Time Travelers Wife* and *Her Fearful Symmetry*. Perhaps more like that would fit the bill?

Sonora Hannah Lilith Assadi. Haven’t gotten very far in it yet, but it’s about two female friends coming of age and involves magical realism. 2017
The bone clocks or slade house by David Mitchell
Family? Flawed parents? Ghosts? Magical Realism? Recent?
I think Miguel Bonnefoy’s Heritage is worth your time here.
Anita de Monte Laughs Last
“Ink” by Sabrina Vourvoulias is good. Its a little older than what you’re looking for, but the plot is extremely relevant to what’s going on in America today.
The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera
