I’m growing really tired of enjoying a great thriller, only to find out the first person narrator has been lying to the reader (and themselves in their own consciousness) the entire time for the sake of a final twist. Just finished ‘My Husband’s Wife’ by Alice Feeney and it doesn’t make any sense due to this trope. Why would someone in first person narrative not think freely within their own minds? The Silent Patient and The Arrangement also come to mind. All these books get such great feedback and I don’t understand, as it means everything you have learned from the characters internal minds becomes void – so end up feeling as though reading the book was pointless…
Can anyone recommend some good thrillers without this unreliable narrator trope – unless executed properly!
