Dude. Wally. I’ve read a few of his books (She’s Come Undone, I Know This Much Is True, The Hour I First Believed) and I know how relentless he can be, but I was kinda unprepared for this one. It’s just brutally sad.
He’s such and incredibly good writer, but I almost put his books down every time because it’s a difficult emotional journey – that stays with you.
I’m not sure if I have a question – just….how do y’all deal with such intense emotional devastation coupled with compelling narrative?

Some people’s real lives are just brutally sad. There was a couple in our little town about 15 years ago that this happened to. The father wasn’t prosecuted but their lives unraveled all the same.
I hadn’t read Wally Lamb in years until my daughter read The River is Waiting last year and recommended it to me. I think of this book fairly often still. I think Lamb just has a talent for writing about tragic situations and putting us right into their lives. I’ve been meaning to go back and reread his earlier books.
