I already have Blindsight and Starfish on my list, but I’d like more recs. I want cosmic, weird, existential, well written, good characterization and horror elementals (horror is optional). Love an underwater setting but that’s also optional. Also doesn’t need to have a happy ending.
Examples of the vibes I’m going for:
SOMA the video game
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
Derelict/Fathom podcast
Wolf 359 podcast
Annihilation
Bunny if Bunny was scifi
Our Wives Under The Sea
I’m in such a reading slump so please help 🙏

Chlorine by Jade Song is a dark, genre-bending debut novel that blends coming-of-age, literary fiction, and body horror, following a young Chinese-American swimmer’s obsessive quest to become a mermaid as an escape from the pressures of her life, including racism, misogyny, and abuse. The story is a surreal and unsettling exploration of identity, trauma, and the desire for transformation, featuring themes of self-harm, sapphic longing, and the brutal realities of immigrant family life
