Hi book lovers, I need help!

I have been in a reading slump since late last year. I got a bit addicted to trashy thriller novels (sorry Frieda McFadden) and read about 10 in a few months, however decided to move away as they just weren’t as gripping and thought-provoking as I wanted.

I need a book that is going to grab me, and pick me up out of this goddamn slump! I am looking for something that is dark and feminine. I really enjoyed Boy Parts by Eliza Clark, My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, and The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. I have considered reading more by Moshfegh, but have heard mixed reviews.

I loved the dark, gothic nature of these books, and enjoyed the unlikeable female protagonist in both titles. I love books that show the really dark side of the female character, and the toxic complex relationships that character has. Let’s hope that isn’t a reflection of myself lol!

I tried to read Bunny by Mona Awad, I really enjoyed the start but then it all got too surreal for me. I like complex narratives, but want a good story I can actually follow along! I’m not a huge fan of fantasy or sci-fi themes. I also really enjoy more modern books, as I find them more readable and relatable.

Sorry for the ramble, I hope this makes sense and gives you an idea of what I am looking for! My dream is for someone to read this and go ‘OMG! Sounds like you would love…’.

    Yours Sincerely,

A gross girl in need of a good read 🖤

honestly you should try “my education” by susan choi – it has this really messy female narrator who gets obsessed with her friend’s wife and makes terrible decisions. the writing is beautiful but also uncomfortable in the best way

also maybe look at “such a pretty girl” by laura wiess, it’s pretty dark and deals with some heavy themes but the protagonist is complex and flawed. not sure if it counts as modern enough for you but definitely has that toxic relationship vibe you’re looking for

Creep by Emma Van Straaten. Unhinged feminine bevaviour but ooffff I couldn’t put it down!
