Hi all, I’m 36 and a half weeks pregnant with my second baby. I know in a month I will be too sleep deprived to read anything without immediately passing out. I would really like to get some reading done now, but I’m tired, my attention span is shot, and I’m having trouble mustering interest in much of anything.

It’s really hard to focus on anything right now so I need something absorbing. I would really like something that is engrossing, entertaining, but also meaningful and gets you thinking. Bonus points if the writing is pretty. I’m a fan of spiritual/religious/existential themes and social justice themes, but also straight up weird stuff.

    Some books I’ve enjoyed:

    The Broken Earth Trilogy

    The Overstorey

    The Library at Mount Char

    Piranesi

    Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Have you read Project Hail Mary? That’s my top rec. However some close contenders are:

I Who Have Never Know Men

This Is How You Lose the Time War

      Monk & Robot Duology

      Humans by Matt Haig

      ALSO CONGRATULATIONS 💛💛

    2. I really enjoyed the Finlay Donovan series. Mom turned impromptu detective.

If you like legal thrillers, the Eddie Flynn series is amazing and not recommend often here.

I also love Frieda McFadden books because they’re easy to follow and usually have a good storyline.

I’m trying to remember what I enjoyed the last few weeks before my second was born about a year ago but I think my subconscious blocked out that time period.

I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman

It’s not super long, it jumps right into the story, and it keeps you searching for answers. Definitely gets you thinking (I *still* think about this book regularly and I read it roughly 200 books ago) and it’s definitely existential.

    4. My book club is for moms, one of the criteria when choosing books is it must be on audible because we listen to books while doing chores, like making dinner or empty the dishwasher. It’s so hard to sit down with a book once you have kids. Just giving a suggestion so you don’t have to give up on reading, can just enjoy it a different way.

The Hike by Drew Magary – super weird, so fun, kind of in the same vein as LAMC and Piranesi.

Also I’m 27w so I’m right behind you! I’m reading like crazy right now because I remember I went from reading 50-60 books a year to a grand total of THREE the year I had my first baby. Haha.

I just read North Woods by Daniel Mason & got very similar vibes as The Overstory. I enjoyed it very much!
