I seem to be extremely picky. I have DNF as many books as I have finished. If I don’t care in the first 50 pages, I’m over it.

Books I’ve given 5 stars recently and what I liked about them:

How High We Go In The Dark (each chapter is its own stand alone story but there is at least 100 connections between them all that make up one large story and message.)

Shark Heart (the magical realism in this one was so absurd but written so beautifully that it was shocking that a premise like this could make you feel something? Hard to explain)

Project Hail Mary (this one is 100% the friendship aspect between Rylan and Rocky. It carried the entire book. I also liked how it gave me bits and pieces of the past to put together a puzzle of what was happening today in the book)

Red Rising (although I’m good on war for right now- I read these all in few months 😅 but I loved this series for the ruthlessness I think)

So really like sci-fi, magical realism, dystopian BUT I am open to anything that makes me want to not put it down because I need to know what happens next. I just don’t like anything with murder or abuse.

And before I get Blake Crouch recs- I’ve read all his books lol and I do love his fast pacing.

    Thanks!

    1. If you’re into magical realism, Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins is a must-read. The plot’s kind of hard to explain, but it weaves a barbarian king, the Greek god Pan, and a modern-day janitor in quest for immortality and the world’s best perfume.

Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut is also a good one for sci-fi fans. A scientist creates a substance that causes water to freeze into ice at any temperature below 114 degrees; hilarity ensues.
