Hey all, Shogun is one of my favorite books of all time and I just watched “The Last Samurai” again for the first time in a long time. I’m so in love with Japanese culture at the time and in general. I absolutely love books like Shogun, Lonesome Dove, Pillars of the Earth, and historical fiction.

Would love suggestions on deeply cultural, meaningful, moving, maybe epic (doesn’t need to be a war novel), or maybe even nonfiction or memoirs that dive deeply on Japanese culture of the time.

Poetry and similar suggestions are also welcome! Though it might be tough to get into a book of haiku (hard to get into a collection of small things as opposite to a larger story).

Any suggestions are incredibly welcome – for anyone who’s seen and loved these two pieces of historical fiction, what has been another samurai / Japanese cultural work that has affected you similarly or even more?

    Thank you!!
