I’m looking for books/academic texts/journal articles about noise from a socio-historical/anthropological/urban studies type lens. Specific research questions are: how and why do various cultures perceive noise/loudness differently? Why do certain cultures covet silence while others don’t? Why do some (especially white) cultures equate loudness with impoliteness?
I live in a dense urban area with lots of noise, and I’ve always been fascinated by the differences in what people deem as socially appropriate— playing loud music in public for example.
