Jane austen does annoying and mean characters so relatably lol. the language and morals are definitely not modern, but not too hard to get. not sure if that works for you. easiest one to start with is pride and prejudice since it has many adaptations you can watch alongside. my personal favourite is persuasion but everyone has a different opinion. if you’re interested the janeausten sub can maybe give you more specific recs for modern feeling ones
