The *His Dark Materials* trilogy is considered YA or adult depending on whom you ask. Similar to Chronicles of Narnia, but IMHO even better.
Try the *Kingdom of Souls* series by Rena Barron too.
*The Giver* series is amazing. I’m millennial, and the first book was a beloved staple read of our generation. The author quietly wrote three more that many of us are just now finding out about.
Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett and the rest of the series! Follows a young girl as she becomes a witch. Deals with grief, responsibility, facing fears. It’s also hilarious. And poignant. So good. I read it as an adult and it’s my favorite book ever.
Make sure you have queer YA in there! There’s so much and it’s my fave genre: I would recommend Kayla Cottingham’s witch series: Practical Rules for Cursed Witches and Extraordinary Quests for Amateur Witches!
All-American Boys was fantastic. It tackled tough issues but was very accessible and easy to understand, being YA
Check E Nesbit
Anything by Diana Wynne Jones
Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett
Chronicles of Prydain
They aren’t fantasy YA but I like the same modern YA as you and I really enjoyed the CHERUB series as a teen. Might vibe with your social work background unless you want to escape from that. There’s a tonne in that series if you ended up enjoying it. There’s the HIVE series as well if you want something less real life.
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Truly Devious series; A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder; Jasper Jones; Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus
I’d highly recommend Hounds of the Morrigan by Pat O’Shea. Narnia vibes but founded in Irish mythology.
The Track series by Jason Reynolds about a middle school track team. Ghost, Patina, Sunny and Lu
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell
The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
The Three Year Swim Club: The Untold Story of Maui’s Sugar Ditch Kids and Their Quest for Olympic Glory by Julie Checkoway
