I’m curious about the failures of America, Britain, and the USSR in Afghanistan. I’d like to understand Afghan anthropology, history, and culture better. Can anyone point me to some good sources that paint a picture of how the country has evolved over time, what makes it unique, and why so many foreign powers have struggled there?

*Afghanistan: A History from 1260 to the Present* by Jonathan L. Lee. Great, long read. Super in depth. Learned so much. Also, a more modern look at the culture: *The Places In Between* by Rory Stewart. He walks across Afghanistan post 9/11 and documents some pretty fascinating people & places.
