    Hi there,
Recently I've become engrossed in the idea of stories of ambient horror and scifi told by a protagonist who is serving at an outpost.

I found a movie, The Gorge, to come close. I know there are other posts that recommend books like "The Wayward Pines" trilogy by Blake Crouch, or "Phantoms" by Dean Koontz. Having read both, they dont quite meet my requirement.

So I'll try to break it down as follows, and hope you learned cats can help :

    1) Protagonist in a specific situation. Hired to fulfill a task. Deserts, forests, basement bunkers
    2) Clear rules about the world. Do this, dont do that.
    3) Plus points for authors who bother to stick within the hard and fast rules of the world and also go the extra mile to utilise interesting tools and tactics. Not necessarily military in tone. But say for instance, I learned a lot about Park Rangers from this video game called Night Watch from 2020. In that the main character is posted at a lookout tower in a national park and they make use of all the tools and considerations of that trade.
    4) Horror and Scifi are both more than welcome, indeed preferred. But thrilling they must be.
    5) Lovely prose is of course appreciated. But since this is a peculiar ask, Im willing to try someone who has a good idea if not as good a pen.
    6) I'm a huge SCP fan/participant. Hope that colors in the edges. Less so now, but it doesnt have the deliberate and informed quality the earlier entries did. Feels like a lot of fanfic mostly. In tone, I mean. Obviously all SCP is just fanfic people have agreed on.

More than happy to discuss this or answer any follow up questions anyone would have.

Please and thank you, for your indulgence. Happy Weekend !
