I read this long short story/short novella months ago, and I’m still thinking about it. The story is told by a mother dying in a rural Latin American clinic. She’s obsessed with the concept of “rescue distance”, the maximum distance she can be from her daughter and still be able to save her should anything bad happen. However, sometimes being protective isn’t enough.

It’s surreal, strange and truly unique. I would especially recommend it if you like Carmen Maria Machado. Also, my cat got out of the house while I was reading it so that really added to the experience. (Luckily, he was fine and didn’t go very far. But I couldn’t help being paranoid about rescue distance!)

    1. Thinking about it still makes me feel worms under my skin. I’d love to know how you interpreted the ending with the other kid briefly getting into the car (I read it years ago and have very strong vibe memories but hazy with solid details).
