I have twelve year old (m) twins who love to be read to. I just finished reading them Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m looking for similar recs. They like historical fiction and sci fi. No fantasy.

    2. At that age, I read Johnny Tremaine, treasure island, and Moby dick. I don’t know if these are still valid today, but I very much enjoyed them back then.

    3. So much of what I associate with reading aloud to children is fantasy! First and foremost they are the perfect age for Lord of the Rings, which are such good books to read aloud and great literature in their own right, but is technically fantasy. Dune might be a good read aloud; as might Isaac Asimov. Mark Twain is good. Dickens might be a bit slow paced, but is around the same reading level as Lord of the Flies – Tale of Two Cities is my favorite that I’ve read.

The more I think about it the more I think fantasy is truly one of the best genres to experience in a group setting like that!
