I’m in high school and I like to read but I never know what to read bc I don’t really wanna read something like super inappropriate but I also don’t wanna read anything childish and I like romance books but every one of them gets freaky I feel like and I also like European History but it’s hard to find books based on that type of history here in the United States

    1. Ruta Sepetys’s books are excellent if you like European history! Nothing more than kisses, and the romance is secondary to the history.

      some Fantasy perhaps?
Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern ( The Harperhall subseries starting with Dragonsong )
Madeleine L’engle’s Winkle in Time Series
Nancy Drew is perhaps to juvenile …
      – That;s my 2cents anyway – Good luck

    3. Author Lisa See – some of her books are heavier than others, but they are beautiful historical fiction books. The Island of Sea Women was one of my recent faves.

Author Georgia Clark – i find her books to be super fun and interesting. The Regulars and the Bucket List were a couple i really like.

Few other authors: Taylor Jenkins Reid, Octavia Butler, Matt Haig

You may also like Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi!

    4. Have you tried Allison Weir of Phillipa Gregory’s books. A lot of my friends and I read them in high school. Allison Weir writes historical fiction and non-fiction about English monarchy. Philippa Gregory writes historical fiction about the English Monarchy.

I read Antigone in high school, so I also feel like Greek retellings are fair game: Clytemnestra by Constanza Casati and Medusa by Natalie Haynes would be something I’d be fine with a 15-16 year old reading.

Georgette Heyer. Nobody gets freaky, she wrote up until the 1970s and mainstream romance novels weren’t spicy like they are now. She wrote historical romance mostly set in 19th century England. My favourite so far is *Frederica.*

If you’re into romance without inappropriate content then I would recommend classic lit, which happens to be my speciality. Jane Austen-Pride and Prejudice, also Persuasion, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, Wuthering Heights by Brontë, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I’ve read them all, they’re my favorites.

I think Victoria Holt’s books would def fit the bill here. My fave is THE SECRET WOMAN

The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery. Romance, but it’s from the same era as Anne of Green Gables so there’s zero inappropriate content

    11. Have you ever read a series of unfortunate events by lemony snicket? The intended audience increases as the series goes along

Also Holly Jackson books are good

When I was your age everyone read Sarah Dessen

    12. If you like fantasy at all, check out KM Shea, Deborah Grace White, and Melanie Cellier. If you like the genre, look at also-boughts from there, as you’ll get tons of great recs! On Amazon, you want to look for “clean and wholesome” romance (I know tons of people dislike calling it clean, but that’s the term Amazon uses) for romance that doesn’t get graphic. This is my genre, so I know tons of great authors but I don’t want to overwhelm you with names if you don’t like fantasy.

Jane Austen is wonderful, and there is also an entire genre of books based on her novels. Not all spinoffs are necessarily clean, so check reviews. You can find them by searching for Jane Austen variations.

Agatha Christie is great if you like mysteries. It’s fun to jump into history since her books are older, but she’s also the master of detective stories and gives you all the clues so you can try to solve the case along with the detective.

Historical, try The Endless Steppe (Russia), The Edge On the Sword (Rebecca Tingle, ancient England), and Mara, Daughter of the Nile (Egypt).

    13. It may be worth trying to read nonfiction as well, if you like European history. There are some excellent books, and because they’re more historical, even if they mention sex they’re not going to go into descriptions.

It’s not so much my genre, so I can’t make so many specific recommendations, but I know that Ken Follett, Philippa Gregory, and Bill Bryson are often listed as being very popular in this genre. I’m sure other people will be able to rec more, or possibly on the history subs.
