My middle child (14) is nonbinary, and after watching & Juliet the other day I noticed they seemed super sad. I asked what was up and they said, “Mom, I’m really happy to see more queer representation out there, and there are more and more stories about gay and trans people, but I almost never see nonbinary people. I just want to see myself reflected in stories.”
They had read the Thousand World Series by Yoon Ha Lee in past years but are now beyond middle-grade novels into more advanced reading. So I’m thinking late YA or adult novels but without a lot of intense trigger warnings.
Thank you! They are an amazing, compassionate and wise human being and I want them to feel as supported as I can.

A lot of Becky Chambers works have non-binary and/or genderqueer characters.
The Murderbot Diaries! Don’t worry, it’s not quite as murder-y as it sounds.
Murderbot, beginning with *All Systems Red,* has lots.
The Mars House by Natasha Pulley is set in a future where all human characters are non-binary. I don’t remember anything specifically triggering about it but YMMV.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, set on an entire planet full of androgynes who may be female one month and make the next. The narrator is the only binary character.
