I got a cheap Audible deal, so I’ve signed up for a few months, but I’m stuck on what to pick for my free monthly audiobook.
I want a really well-narrated audiobook. I might be fussy, but I don’t want to spend my time listening to someone read slower than I could in my head unless they bring something extra to the experience? Also, this might sound strange and a bit rude, but I sometimes struggle to get into audiobooks because certain performances give me secondhand embarrassment. This happens because of a range of reasons, such awkward pacing, or bad character accents (I’m thinking of a certain ice hockey romance here…).
I’m open to pretty much any genre, but I’d prefer fiction. I do enjoy horror and I love authors like Joyce Carol Oates and Cormac McCarthy. I also realize I haven’t explored much classic literature, so if there’s an interesting classic novel with an audiobook that adds to the experience, I’d love to know about it!

Dracula, by Bram Stoker, voiced by Alan Cumming, Tim Curry, Simon Vance, and others
Whether you have read them previously or seen the movies, The Lord of the Rings series, narrated by Andy Serkis is next level. You can probably borrow it (through Libby) from your library.
I don’t have a specific answer because I have no clue what you’re looking for, but if reading speed is an issue, audible lets you accelerate it substantially. I’d definitely encourage experimenting if that’s a big part of your issue.
There’s a point at super high speed where your headphone quality may be a limitation, but you should be able to find a more comfortable pace without it being an issue. It’s more as you gradually want to creep faster over time that you might get there.
I always listening audiobooks on My Passion app, definitely not about classic literature, but any other genre are there
If you search for Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobook, you’ll find a BUNCH of people saying “first time I ever enjoyed an audiobook” and things like this. It is definitely a train worth jumping on.
You might like The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett.
And it’s worth noting that you can adjust the speed of the audio if you feel that a narrator is too slow. You can even adjust the speed while listening to a book’s preview to be sure it’s what you’d like to hear.
