I'm fascinated by the dynamics of crime organizations, from small gangs, to the Mafia, and organized crime families. I'd love to read more books with that type of setting, but all I seem to find is crime thrillers, or dark romance books. I'm happy for the book to center around crime, or romance, but I'm looking for something a little more grounded and realistic than that.

The main thing I'm looking for is a book where organized crime and secret loyalties impact the characters' lives in a real way in their day to day lives.

Open to pretty much any genre- Literary, Historical, Romance, etc., even narrative nonfiction ,just ideally not a typical crime book where the main appeal is the shocking plot twists, or the gore and horror aspect. Thanks in advance!

    1. Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead small time fence in 60s Harlem by a great author

Queen of Burglars by Shayne Davidson nonfic about a female crime boss in NYC in mid 19th century

    2. Mario Puzo, the author of *The Godfather* has a ton of mafia-related books. I’m not going to go into him as a person and how much of what he wrote is totally made up, but who cares? They’re interesting books! They’re not winning any literary prizes but you definitely can devour them and it doesn’t have gore or horror, for the most part.
