I'm having surgery in a few weeks time and would love some books to read that I can escape into. I haven't been an avid reader in awhile, but those that I have loved include The Book of Longings by Sue Monk-Kidd (cried), The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar, and Burial Rites by Hannah Kent.

For some extra info, I love historical fiction and the idea of time travel. I'd love to read some more magical realism. Because I'll be in recovery mode, it would be nice to read something 'easy' and not too heavy.

    Thanks all 🙂

    1. I’d suggest most of the popular Japanese novels that are around now. Most are around 150-200 pages, a lot are a collection of interlinked short stories, and all the ones I’ve read have had an element of magical realism

    2. For historical fiction, try The Fair Botanists and The Secrets of Blythswood Square, by Sara Sheridan, both set in Scotland in the 1800s.

For magical realism, try The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley, or A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman. Also the Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker, and the sequel The Hidden Palace.
