    Helloooo!

I’m looking for beautifully written classics with a strong romantic undercurrent and a setting so wild and alive it feels like a character in its own right — a la Wuthering Heights (which I know isn’t technically a romance, but you know the atmosphere I mean).

I’m currently reading The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough because I do love a tortured, sexy priest, and I’m enjoying it so far. That said, I’m finding myself wishing for a stronger female lead. Meggie is still very young at this point in the story, so that may very well change, but I tend to gravitate toward more stubborn, sharp-edged heroines; less angelic ingénue, more proud, guarded energy (I love Frank so much!).

I’m heavily eyeing North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell as my next read, but I’d love to hear any recommendations that fit this bill. Lush prose, palpable longing, and a heroine with a hell of a backbone.

    Thank you in advance 🙂
