I’ve always been a huge sucker for horror novels ( I was raised on Stephen King and Dean Koontz) and have recently been on a bit of a dystopian kick. I love 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, and I just wrapped up Make Room! Make Room! Honestly, Make Room is one of the most interesting books I’ve read in a long time, and I’d love some suggestions for dystopian stories that are in a similar vein.
Which sounds easy enough, but I’m picky.
Like I said, I love horror, and I’m the kind of person who is always chasing the most brutal, disgusting, and downright upsetting horror movies and books that I can. Whether it’s because of gore or a dystopian world that is too close to our own for comfort (looking at you, Make Room!), I’d love to hear about some of the most disturbing dystopian novels around.
Bonus points if there isn’t a huge focus on romance or sex; it’s not as interesting to me and it’s the main thing keeping me from reading a few books, including Tender is the Flesh. I also like older books (Make Room! Is from 1966) because it’s fun to compare them to today, but I’m pretty flexible on that.

This Perfect Day, by Ira Levin
Brave New World is very disturbing, but not in a gory way, same goes for the Handmaid’s Tale, while a bit more shocking. More in the cyberpunk zone it is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? All of them are classics for a reason.
Disturbing because of how relevant it is, despite being written in 1993: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler.
