I read Project Hail Mary soon after receiving it for Christmas from my brother-in-law. I believe it was early-January of this year of our lord 2026. I read it in 2 days, and finished it around 3 am on a work night because of course I did. It had me hooked, which is crazy because Sci-Fi is not my favorite genre, and is in fact, not even in my top 5. I was also getting out of a reading slump at the time and reading this so fast gave me whiplash lol

This book was nothing short of a genuinely great time from beginning to end. I could tell you about how I felt throughout it, but this is a review that would have to have MAJOR spoilers if I want to be detailed about it. I simply believe that anyone who has even the slightest interest in this novel, for any reason be it your love of space, astronauts, Andy Weir, science, nerdiness, or even just the desire to have a good time, should go into it blind. There are moments in the story that just hit your emotions hard, or make you laugh, or make you super tense, and they’ll all leave you questioning everything you’ve been picturing in your head. There were layers of problems that needed to be solved, and they were added one by one throughout the book in a fashion that gives you no time to dwell on anything else. I was eating it UP.

Before the ending came, I had pictured my version of the ending already and played it through my head. It probably had many plot holes and didn’t make scientific sense. My thoughts can be stupid sometimes, leave me alone. When the storyteller Mr. Weir’s ending arrived, I had a visceral reaction to how much I hated it lol. I went through all five stages of grief in 5 seconds. It wasn’t until after the fact, that I realized it was actually a good ending. My ending wouldn’t have really worked.

I give it 5 stars, and would recommend it for anyone who likes to read Sci-Fi, as well as anyone who simply likes Fiction/A good adventure story. I personally loved it that much.

I will not be giving a spoiled review for this novel. It’s just too good to spoil.

    1. Good for you. I’m half way and somehow I’m bored there. The mystery is gone once we have clear descriptions of the thing…

    2. Yes! I loved this book too.
Perhaps not quite as entertaining, but may I recommend The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler
