I’m in a book club which went on well for a while but sort of fizzled out in the last few months, due to a combination of some of our members were going through a rough time and choosing books which were a bit too niche and hardgoing.

We’d like something easy and involving – basically great storytelling – that also has some literary merit and isn’t too depressing.

    Previously we all really enjoyed:

    Detransition Baby by Torrey Peters

    The Magician by Colm Toibin

    Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

Something campy and fun and queer would be a bonus but not at all necessary.

    Edit: fiction only please!

    1. Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean is about smokejumpers caught in the Mann Gulch fire of 1949 and how it led to the deaths of 13 of them. The fire occurred in Mann Gulch in Montana’s Gates of the Mountains Wilderness on August 5. The book was a national bestseller and won the 1992 National Book Critics Circle Award for general non-fiction.

    2. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Explores relationship between Achilles & Patroclus. It’s blurb doesn’t do it justice. It may not sound like something you’d like but it’s really, really good.

    3. Highly recommend Big Swiss based on your preferences 😀 it’s so much fun, queer, and totally ridiculous!
