I read a lot of cozy romance. I enjoy it overall, but I l have to say I get sick of the unrealistic small town settings. Towns that are so small everyone knows everyone else yet somehow they have thriving downtowns with multiple niche stores and shopkeepers that give away expensive items out of the goodness of their hearts. The main characters often also have jobs they are not in any way qualified for, or jobs that seem to make a lot more money than real life.

I want a book where the setting is a bit more realistic. I don't mean gritty and miserable, and I want a happy ending, but I'd like to see someone working to get a job, or pay the rent, or juggle life. I just read Again, Rachel by Marion Keyes and while the romance wasn't to my taste, I really got into the stories of the other addiction patients. I would have been more interested in following a few of them than the actual romance!

Contemporary is preferred. Romance is fine, but also fine if it's not. A city setting would be great, but small town is fine as long as it's not this idealized small town fantasy setting.

Remarkably Bright Creatures, the character’s jobs don’t magically appear and provide instant cash
