i know this is a tall order but i am looking for a book which has at least a semi-balanced framing of the USSR… i am not someone who believes in whitewashing the atrocities of the communist bloc (tankies love this one trick lol) NOR am i a 'red scare' anti-socialist type of person.

i would prefer a book with a female protagonist, or at very least a heavily featured woman in a main supporting role. the books in this setting i've read with only, or mostly, male characters have leaned heaving into certain 'macho' stereotypes which is exhausting and boring to read, in my opinion.

*The Master and Margarita* a novel by Elena S. Bulgakova and Mikhail Bulgakov

“The Master and Margarita is a satirical novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, written between 1928 and 1940, that blends fantasy, satire, and philosophy as the devil (Woland) visits atheistic Moscow, intertwining with a story of a persecuted writer (the Master) and his lover, Margarita, and a retelling of the Pontius Pilate story. A masterpiece of 20th-century literature, it was published posthumously and censored, with its full, uncensored version appearing later, and is known for its dark humor, critique of Soviet society, and exploration of good versus evil.”
