I like scifi, I've read a lot of the classics – Asimov, Clark, Heinlein, Dune, Enders Game etc.

But I'd never read these 2 famous series and managed to read them both in a fairly short period. I havent yet read the last 2 books of the Hyperion Cantos (in fact I'm almost 1/3rd thru book 3, but 3+4 are very different tonally and I delayed it) so its unfinished and next.

I almost feel overwhelmed, like the s/n noise ratio has gone too high and my brain is overloaded. Both of these are so rich with ideas and characters.

I started reading some more newer scifi from the library but I'm subsconsciously looking for the same sense of grandeur/epic scope and I got dissapointed. Which of course might be considered unfair to any work of literature.

I want to finish the Cantos but a part of me also wants to reread the 1st 2 books again. I also started Ian M Banks Consider Phlebas and the Culture universe seems like its going to be good.

I know there must be plenty more in the same vein (hard scifi, grand ideas, rich story). I read some Vernor Vinge (Across Realtime) a while back.

    What would you recomend?
