i'd like suggestions for books with writing so beautiful and lyrical you can tell from the opening that the author is in love with words, with writing. books where each word is carefully picked and given justice. i'm good with any kind of book! thank you.

Memorial Days by Geraldine Brooks. She wrote it after the passing of her husband and it’s a memoir, self reflection, and honestly a love story to finding her way back to writing. I thought it was beautiful.
Happiness by Will Ferguson. The MC is an editor, coping with idiotic writing by his clients and the prose is beautiful
Personally, I don’t think writing has to be beautiful and lyrical to tell the author is in love with writing.
Since that’s what you’re looking for, though:
– Written on the Body – Jeannette Winterson
– Giovanni’s Room – James Baldwin
– The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
Could I say, The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. To me, it is beautifully written
Anything by Cormac McCarthy!
An odd recommendation because the author never finished his series, but The Name Of The Wind / The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfus has some of the nicest and most poetic prose I’ve read. If only the author liked writing just a little bit more to finish the trilogy :,)
David Mitchell is an absolute master of crafting beautiful prose. His style is always unique to the story/character, and his novels always have brilliant structures.
Hermann Hesse is my fave author. He is KNOWN for being lyrical, poetic and profound in his prose. Try Siddhartha or Steppenwolf
The opening of chapter 1:
THE STAINS OF RUST SEEMED TO MAP BLOOD SEAS ON THE BLACK, pocked surface of Mock’s Vane. A century-old, it squatted on the point of an old pike that had been bolted to the outer top of the Hold’s wall. Monstrous and misshapen, it had been cold‐hammered into the form of a winged demon, teeth bared in a leering grin, and was tugged and buffeted in squealing protest with every gust of wind.
