I was neither into literature nor history but into math, logic and stuff. I'm currently pursuing my major in computer science, suddenly having this strong urge to learn philosophies, buddhism, history, politics all those topics i used to ignore. A lot happened in my life in the past year.
I do not like self help books or fiction that much. I've read diary of a little girl by Anne Frank in my teens. I tried horror/fiction recently but I lost it and the book is collecting dust now.
I'm not a native speaker, I learned english mostly from the internet video games etc.. At this point you all might feel like I'm not a member belonging in this community but I think I'm developing new views and perspectives.

Gödel, Escher, Bach, by Douglas R. Hofstadter
In my second language, I usually read books meant for 9-11 year olds. These are sometimes called “middle grades.” Luckily, one of the best authors in English writes at this level. You will find him just called Avi. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, The Traitors’ Gate, or Crispin are all worthwhile. Enjoy the journey to becoming a reader.
