Books about the history of aliens?

I feel like there's got to be a good book out there about the history of aliens in world culture. I'm looking for non fiction about topics like: when did aliens first start to show up in human media? Why? How has their image changed over time?

I tried googling it and came up with…well, nonsense. Anyone have a good recommendation?
