That’s a bleak list. Lighten things up a bit – try The Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy, or something by PG Wodehouse (I like the Blandings Castle books but everyone else seems to prefer Jeeves and Wooster).

You could give one of the other Brontë sisters a go. Try Jane Eyre by Charlotte or the Tennant of Wildfell Hall by Anne.
If you’d prefer something (a tad) more contemporary, try out Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.
