I’m currently on Chapter 12 (where’s Cathy’s locked herself in her room after fighting with Heathcliff and Edgar), and I’m suddenly not sure *why* I’m reading this.
What am I suppose to be getting out of it? What do the people who like it enjoy about it?
I knew going into it that it’s not a romance, that it’s more about obsession, toxic relationships, etc. I also knew it’s not a story with heroes and people you want to root for. So my expectations weren’t off.
And I did enjoy it for a while. But now I’ve hit a point where I’m like “ok, they’re all troubled, immature and toxic- what else?”
Is there anything else going forward beyond these people just being awful to each other?
I’m gonna take a break from it regardless, but I’m just trying to understand what I’m “missing,” if anything at all?

people who love it usually aren’t reading it as a romance. it’s more like a gothic character study of obsession and generational damage
I read it first when I was in high school, and I was like, what the hell, where’s the good part, all these people are just crazy. Then I read it again in my early 30s and was like, OH, that’s the good part. All these people are just crazy.
Point being: everyone is bonkers and it’s a wild ride. That may or may not be for you.
You’re not missing anything. Toxic people being toxic to each other. Thats about it.
I recently re-read it, and hit the same point as you, wondering why I was bothering. I was a little further than you though, so I pushed through to finish it.
I read it for the obsession and the toxic relationships
I loved the scene you have described haha. It was truly a huge “popcorn in hand” moment that I found it immensely entertaining to read. That said, the circumstances of the characters will change a lot soon.
It does get mentally draining at some points, but I stuck with it for the prose. I just love the writing from that time period.
Yeah if you don’t enjoy reading about the depths to which people can sink when they want revenge, or toxic relationship dynamics, it might not be the book for you.
I finished it, but I didn’t get a lot of happiness out of it. I was satisfied to finish it but don’t think I’d read it again. Its just not the kind of book I’d read for fun, more the book I’ll read because then I can talk about it from my own knowledge, rather than memes and other people’s analysis of it. And I love talking about books
